A Health Teacher Instructs Her Pupils About The Relevance Of Alcohol Dependency Signs

Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the most under financed co-educational high school in the district. Although she had been teaching for only three years, she had already established a reputation as a teacher with instructional techniques that inspired and motivated students to learn and to think.

As an illustration, one Friday afternoon she addressed the students in her class and said the following: "For the next four or five days we are going to learn about some usual alcoholism signs from a more broad-based perspective and we are also going to learn about several of the most typical signs of alcoholism from a more detailed point of view."

"Not every one of these alcoholism warning signs will definitely establish that a drinker with a drinking problem is an individual who is alcohol dependent, but the more signs that a drinker manifests, the greater the possibility that she or he is an alcohol addicted individual."

Miss Jackson then informed the class that each person would be responsible for investigating four alcohol addiction signs and then presenting his or her conclusions to the other class members by way of a thirty minute oral presentation.

The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were discussed and presented in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked her pupils to go over the list and rank the top nine alcohol dependency signs that were most indicative of alcohol dependency. After approximately ten minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and explained to the students in her classroom that after she evaluates the numbers, she will reveal her findings the morning of the next school day.

Miss Jackson asked her students to look over the information she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any concerns, questions, or issues. Within 40 or 50 seconds, virtually every pupil in the classroom raised her or his hand. It was noticeable that the students had some questions, issues, or concerns about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism experts. For example, just about every individual in the classroom had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism professionals, to be exact, "Do you feel unusually ill when you quit drinking?"

Miss Jackson then told her pupils why this answer was the most accurate sign of alcohol dependency. She highlighted the fact that the primary difference between alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcoholism and not with alcohol abuse.

Basically this means that when an individual who is alcohol dependent all of a sudden quits drinking, she or he will suffer through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the relevance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the individual who is addicted to alcohol, the students started to grasp the essential difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency.

A few minutes later the bell rang, signaling the end of class. Based on the excitement manifested by the pupils when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson knew that she had encouraged and motivated the students in her class to stop and think about a critical social problem and health issue that exists in our society.
